July 16 / Day 56 / Orillia to The Big Chute / 30.0 NM

Fins and Hour Plan heading out from Orillia

Off the dock at 8, across Lake Couchiching, the Trent Canal, down lock 42 and across Sparrow Lake.

Moose on the Trent Severn spotted on the Trent Severn 🤣

Dolphins on the Trent😂

We got held up at lock 43 waiting for a thunder storm to pass by, as the lock masters are not allowed to operate the locks in lightning..makes good sense!

Thunder storm rolling towards us

One more lock and we arrived at the upper side of the Big Chute lock (portage).  It is a marine railway operated by Parks Canada with lift capacity of 110 tons which can carry boats up to 100' in length. Cool to watch. . . but a bit terrifying to think our boat will be taking this ride.
Our first look at the Big Chute Marine Railway

We had met a couple earlier in the day tied up to a lock wall that were camping in their pontoon boat.  A fellow Looper, Gail, from The Good Life, had learned that their engine had quit and they were not allowed to stay at the marina next to us because they did not have a 'head' on their boat.  The captain was going to swim and pull his boat over to the Parks Canada docks.  Gail and Tim took a ride over to them and offered a tow.  Nice to earn a bit of 'good karma' before portaging your boat.
