Off the dock at 8. Two interesting navigational
points of interest today. One is the
Kirkfield lock which is another lift lock (much like the Peterborough lock where they add or subtract water to raise or
lower the counter acting lock basins). At
this one we entered at the top, so imagine driving your car to the edge of a
cliff and look down 5 stories (but you are in a boat - floating - yeah).
The other was where the Trent Canal had some of
the narrowest stretches of the trip.
Again, imagine going down a side street in your neighborhood where only
one car can travel at a time, make it six miles long, flood it with six feet of water and put yourself on it in a boat. We did
encounter a couple boats coming at us from the opposite direction, but the
timing was such that we passed along some of the wider portions.
