March 31 / Day 314 / Jacksonville to Amelia Island / 50 NM

Saturday 3/31   Left the dock at 8:00, travelling with Ladybug today as we are both headed to the same marina.  The St. John’s River portion of the trip was a bit of a slog. Not only were we going against the tide, but as we were approaching the FEC / Jacksonville Railroad Bridge, it started to go down and we were stuck floating on the wrong side for a good ½ hour as a very large, very slow freight train went by.   We finally made it back on the ICW at 11:40, but fortunately, it was only another 21 miles to our destination.

We arrived at Amelia Island Yacht Basin at 2:15.  Getting into our slip proved to be another challenge as the wind had picked up considerably and wanted to push us into the 42 foot Pearson sailboat next to us.  With the skill of Captain Tim and the help of the dockhand and a few fellow Loopers who came out to catch our lines, we got secured without any damage.  The Loopers who came to help were Manatee and Chemistry who we hadn’t seen since Fort Walton Beach and Tarpon Springs, respectively.

The wind finally settled down in the evening

A rather uneventful afternoon followed before heading to the adjacent restaurant, The Galley, to enjoy our first meal out in awhile.  We sat down at the bar next to the crew of Ladybug who were just getting ready to leave.  They decided to stay and have a drink with us as we dined on pulled pork (Tim)  and fried shrimp (Alice).
