October 31 / Day 163 / Bay Springs Marina to Smithville / 35.5 NM

Sunrise

Up early (even for Millie) and got our chores squared away.  Mike called the lockmaster who was non-committal.  He had a tow about to lock through (up river - good for us).  Mike indicated we would get over to the lock and be ready when the lockmaster was ready. We left the dock at 6:45 (pre- sunrise) and we were at the lock by 7.  We entered the lock about an hour later.  Two other boats from the marina joined us last minute and locked through with us.  Being Halloween, the boat Drift Away was dressed up for Halloween and left Halloween treats for the lockmaster (making those of us from Salem look very very bad)!  We sailed through the next lock at Montgomery and we were about to enter the Rankin lock when we were advised that an inspection team had showed up and we were told to stand by for an undetermined amount of time.  An hour later the inspection team broke for lunch and the lockmaster locked us through - Yay!
View along the river

One more lock at Folton and a few more miles upriver to Smithville Marina.  Active Captain (Yelp for boaters) reviews on this marina vary from "this is where boats go to die" to "it's a bit tired but the people are really nice."  Both ended up being true.

In the parking lot next to the decrepit RV park was this truck with four flat tires

View of Observer from the shore

We saw a tired house boat with a great bumper sticker (it actually received the coveted Observer best bumper sticker of the trip):

"Noah was a liveaboard."

To top it all off we are staying at this seemingly haunted / ghost marina on Halloween night- what timing!
Millie guarding the boat!
