November 11 / Day 174 / Pensacola to Fort Walton Beach

We left the anchorage early and hit some pretty heavy winds and waves as we headed further east.  Lots of windshield wiper action but we plugged along and arrived at the Fort Walton Beach City free dock.

In the "Governor Stone" Slip.  I hope he is out for the night!

The dock abuts a pretty park and the downtown.

We arrived just in time to hit the local farmer's market.

Our bounty (those cupcakes were divine)!

After returning from the farmer's market, just off the stern of the boat, we saw what looked like a strange buoy bobbing in the water.

This "buoy" looks a lot like a crab traps

Soon thereafter, a manatee popped up for some air and we initially thought, he must be caught in the buoy.

Quite a crowd formed, including a police officer who called the Wildlife and Fisheries Department.  We come to find out (from the ever so knowledgeable Paige on Golden) that he was attached to a satellite linked radio (GPS if you will) tag to monitor him.  After he swam under our dock and under Golden, we saw that he was not alone.

One manatee attached to the tag in the upper left and another manatee in the bottom right

We stopped to the get some ice at the local liquor store and met the most passionate, knowledgeable beer salesperson I've ever come across.   Needless to say I left with more than ice.
One of the many beers Tim just had to buy!

A local had told us not to miss the gulf beaches in this area "the sand is as white as snow".  So on my bike ride today I took a ride over there and got a few photos of the white sand for all our followers.

We learned that this area is really a summer resort area.  It's a little too cool in the winter so this is their slow season.
