September 5 - 8 / Day 107 - 110 / Grafton, Illinois

Up early, called the LaGrange lock (this is the last day they will be open between 8-5 until Sunday).  The lock master told us to come down and we should get in when we arrive or just a 1/2 hour after.  We dodged a bunch of tows with barges waiting their turn to be locked down and slid right into the lock.  On the south side of the lock there were several tows (we counted 26) with large barges waiting their turn on that side of the river.  It will be a long wait for them to lock through.  This stretch of the river is a bit more rural but there are plenty of northbound tows to coordinate passes with on our way further south.  Arrived @ Grafton Harbor at 4:15 . . .that was a long push today.  We joined a number of Looper crews at the marina restaurant to celebrate the crossing of fellow Loopers Jan & Kent aboard Follow that Dream who crossed their wake today. We've learned a lot the last few days spending time with these folks - great people.

Weds. 9/06 today was a true day off. We needed groceries but we were invited to the winery at the top of the hill Aerie's for a late lunch - spectacular views of the river.

We took Millie for a walk down Main Street only to realize this town honors the tradition of closing down on Wednesday afternoons.  A bit later in the day we walked down to the Loading Dock with Millie and had a lite bit and drink at the really cool river side hang out.  Just about everyone in the place came over and interacted with Millie - she loved it.

Thurs. 9/07 relaxing but uneventful.  We borrowed the courtesy car and did some food shopping, checked out the bike trail and then hit the Hawg Pit BBQ (# 1 Biker Bar in 2010) for buckets of ribs.  It was a last get together with the crew of Follow that Dream now Gold Loopers.

Friday 9/08 it was wash the boat day and bike ride in the other direction.  It's Friday night and there were lots of visitors to the marina and it's restaurant by the locals enjoying the last bit of summer weather. We grilled up a great dinner on the boat.

A few interesting things about Grafton.  One is that it is the winter nesting place of the bald eagle and while we didn't see any adult eagles while we were there, we did see a bunch of immature eagles, Sadly, no photos.

Another interesting thing about Grafton are the 1993 flood level indicators all over town,

along with the river homes built post 1993 to handle such a catastrophe happening in the future.
