October 22 - 24 / Day 154 -156 / Battery Hill II to Chattanooga / 47 NM

Sunday 10/22   We were up early, fed Millie and then dinghy to shore for 'a walk'.  As soon as Millie jumps on this really short stretch of beach, I heard an animal breathing about 10' into the woods.  "I don't think that's a chipmunk" and I was not going to wait around to find out!  We did a roadrunner speed exit and tried our luck on the opposite shoreline. Success!

Observer at anchor in the morning

We raised the anchor and made our way to Chattanooga.  Beautiful area of shore line along today's route complete with more beautiful waterfront homes.

We passed lots of rock cliffs like this one

Beautiful natural landscaping

Tim thought this house was cool with the lookout tower

We have a great slip right near the Aquarium downtown.

We grabbed Millie and had a great walk around the area.  There is all kind of really great public art everywhere you look.

Probably Tim's favorite

Definitely my favorite

I tried to get Millie to do a high five (which she is more than capable of), but she would have nothing to do with it!

Cool antebellum estate that houses part of the Hunter Art Museum

We happened upon a Suzuki violin concert and saw some beautiful architecture.

The youngest musicians were 5 years old, all playing multiple pieces without sheet music

I thought these trees made great window awnings

Interesting windows on this house

We finished off the day with dinner with the crews of Golden, Heaven to Betsy, Nellie Mae, Kia Mae at Tony's for a great pasta dinner.

Monday 10/23   Whenever I think of walking Millie in the pouring rain as I did this morning I think of my sister and brother in law who have four dogs and it really makes me feel better about it. The rain let up and then stopped late morning and the sun came out.  Our first stop of the day was the Tennessee Aquarium.

There always seems to be a butterfly house in aquariums

Lots and lots of jelly fish

There are two buildings - one for fresh water and one for saltwater.  It certainly lived up to its reputation as one of the best aquariums in the country.  Later we took the free electric bus up to the Chattanooga Choo Choo.  It is a hotel where the old station is the lobby and restaurant and the guest stay in old railroad cars.

How cool is that?  We finished off the day with a great meal at Hennens Restaurant for Tim's birthday.  We had a great dining experience!

Tuesday 10/24    Today we played big time tourists.  Mike and Paige from Golden rented a car for all of us.  First stop was the Incline Railway up to Lookout Mountain.  It's about 2,000 ft. up and at one spot, there is a grade of 72% near the top making it the steepest passenger railway in the world.

From the bottom looking up. The little block building at the top is the tram station.

And it was!

They have a great look out from the top and there ia a neat little at the top.

We saw some great homes walking down the street to the National Park Service's famous Point Park where the Battle above the Clouds Battle was fought in 1863.

New York Monument

Spectacular views from this park and the NPS visitor center gives and overview of the battle. We returned back to our car via the incline railway.

Next stop - Rock City.  It's an attraction full of wonderful botanical and geologic features. It originated as the home of Gene and Frieda Carter in the late 1920.  During the depression they started opening up their grounds to the public as an attraction.  You can see seven states from one vista.  We really enjoyed our tour here.

Last up was Ruby Falls - the tallest and deepest underground waterfall that's open to the public.  We started our descent in an elevator and then we're guided through caverns with geological formations.

Light show!

We happened to get to Ruby Falls and be part of the same tour as 4 other Looper boats.  It was definitely worth checking out but not the same level of "wow factor' of our first two experiences of the day.  We returned to the boat in time to get Millie out for a nice walk before her and our dinner.  We joined Betsy and Steve for dinner at Pucketts Grocery (but it's a restaurant). We really enjoyed our stay here in Chattanooga.
